Ooh, I can be *such* a bitch!

People never change their minds. OK, they do, but not often. Even when presented with devastatingly powerful evidence, people still cling onto their convictions. This is well known in science.... In science, people rarely change their minds about theories they hold dear, it's just that eventually all the people who support the bad theories die and are replaced by new generations of scientists who have been brought up on the newer, better theories. If you want a recent example, look up the "Steady State" vs. "Big Bang" theories. The "Steady State" theory has been long forgotten, nowadays, not because its exponents were ever convinced by the "Big Bang" theory, but because they died.

Another example is theism vs. atheism. It is extremely rare to see somebody switch sides. But anyway, what got me thinking about this is that on the rare occasion that we have an argument, it always follows a predictable formula which looks something like this:

The loop doesn't go on forever though. I try to brake the cycle by changing the subject... this works for a while until we dive back into the argument. :D It's a good job I love her (and she's hot).

Anyway, I don't think I can be bothered to write any more and you certainly can't be bothered to read it.

Love and kisses,

  1. This is why it's almost worth being gay, you can just punch your partner if you get into an argument. The number of conflicts that could have been avoided with my ex through a punch...

  2. then if she's hot... it solves the problem.

  14. Me and my girlfriend (at least so far) have been being democratic, we both try to make sure that if there is a problem its addressed as soon as we can deal with it, and we try to deal with it very comfortably.

The trick of it is that if either of us gets angry, we pause the convo, and come back when there is more calm. You may find that effective.

  15. There are still a few "steady state" believers, although there is little support for them. Yay for arguments.

  16. OMG!!! I have to use this graph with my wife or coworkers. I think you have a great book idea on your hand.

  17. This is where you start stonewalling and pretend you don't hear her. Breaks that cycle pretty fast.

  18. Haha, good point. It sounds like she may be arguing for the sake of argument at that point. Arguments can be healthy in moderation, sharpening each others logic, consistency, rationale and solving issues between people, but only if it remains civil and doesn't escalate into something tense and shouting.

  19. you're so right.
i'm terrible at arguing though. that formula just not works for me. it'd be more like:

she states her argument -> i say "yeah, okay. you're right" even when she's not. :| lol

  20. True. Arguments with women are useless. Because for men argument should have statements and follow logics. For women argument ends when she feels like it, not when it's logically finished :D

  21. Its easy to change someones mind if you can get their defenses down. The defenses obviously arnt down in an argument or a debate, those are too confrontational.

  22. Haha I know what you mean. Sometimes, you just cannot argue with people. No matter how logical your argument is, people rarely back down or admit you're right or change their opinion.

    Good blog. Following and supporting.

  23. I have an additional problem. For some reason, when I agree with her if it's anything more than a "mmhmm" and a nod, she'll think that I'm being condescending.

I've been dying to try telling her that her that I heard one of her friends disagreeing with her opinion and seeing if that works. Maybe later when I care less.

  29. that is a great way of looking at it! I wondered what happened to the steady-statists, it's such an appealing theory.

Also lol at your gf. I usually don't bother arguing with women, they respond better to emotional stimuli anyway :P

  47. all one can do is simply plant some strong seeds of doubt instead of trying to debunk their every argument.

  48. Thats picture isnt just spot on for girlfriends, but all women! Not even kidding. 1 in 100 might go past that first argument.
